About the owner
Material World (Daisy) is officially owned by ‘Southern Bloodstock(GB)’. This was a racing partnership set up and run by Suzy Smith’s father, Robin Smith. Originally there were four joint owners each having an equal share (one leg each). Each leg owner has since sold out to Robin - banking gains in value having also enjoyed a share out of the prize monies and the unique experience of being part of a fortunate group of people involved with an extraordinary mare.
After the end of her brilliant racing career, Daisy took on the role of a high class broodmare and has so far produced two fine offspring - Material Star by Kayf Tara in 2009 - now owned by the Material World Racing Club and Storm Patrol by Shirocco in 2011. Both Robin and trainer Suzy Smith were keen that Daisy should have a good home for breeding and eventually a long and happy retirement. They both share the view that ‘Daisy owes us nothing and we owe her much’.
Robin was not brought up with horses but became involved when his two daughters, Emma and Suzy, took up horse riding where they lived in Epsom. The whole family shared the use of a lively ex arab racehorse, Royal Minstrel, which they all exercised at different times over Epsom Downs.
Other horse interests for Robin include watching the progress of his first bred winning mare, Empress Orchid and a share of the promising Natural Spring. The latter is currently laid off with a typical horse tendon injury but should be back in action early in 2012. Robin is a member of the Racehorse Owners Association and the Thoroughbred Breeders Association and recommends anyone involved in racing or breeding to join these very informative and supportive organisations.
Robin lives in West Wittering, West Sussex with his wife Carol. His other main interests are sailing, sea fishing, golf, and learning classical guitar at the West Sussex Guitar Club where he serves on their committee as hospitality officer. His paid work includes local property and boat storage management. Robin also runs an 'Executor Support Service' which assists people with financial and property administration both before and after death.
