Material World

The Jockey, Colin Bolger

Colin BolgerLike many good jockeys, Colin hails from Ireland.  Trainer Suzy Smith says is a great asset to the yard as he often comes to help with work rides and therefore gets to know the horses better than a jockey who is simply recruited and turns up at the track for a ride.

Colin was an integral part of the Material World partnership as it was especially important that a horse with only one eye had complete trust in the jockey. The Racing Post have awarded Colin at least two occasions ‘ride of the week’ for his excellent judgement in bringing  Material World home in first place – once against the favourite Gungadu at Wincanton and the other time in a battling finish against Freetown  at Cheltenham.

Colin and Material World have on two big race occasions finished many lengths clear of Tony McCoy on the much fancied Refinement and well clear of other well fancied horse and rider combinations from the bigger yards.

Suzy states she likes using him as he is strong in a finish and rides to instructions.

Colin was a ‘Conditional’ jockey when he rode Material World and was therefore able to claim a useful 3lb allowance in most races.

He still rides many horses for Suzy although he is now a full professional with no further allowances permitted.
